FOLK SCHOOL2TIONESTA, Pa. – Forest Folk School, a division of Taylor Diversion Programs in Tionesta, is offering a variety of unique workshops this summer and fall.

This new education center is located on Lighthouse Island along the Allegheny River.

Taught by seasoned artisans, the Folk School’s intergenerational workshops, ranging in length from two hours to multiple weekends, offer participants an opportunity to learn the arts and skills of their ancestors.

A number of traditional workshops have been scheduled throughout the summer and fall of 2015.

In these workshops, participants will create and take home a finished piece, and the knowledge to make more on their own.

August will bring workshops in chip carved gourd bird houses and bowls, painting birds and flowers in acrylic, carving faces in wood, paper crafting with old hymnals, and basket weaving.

In September, the Folk School will be offering wool braided baskets and bowls, and drawing portraits in colored pencil.

Some workshops that are in the planning stages include: cold porcelain clay flower sculpting, guitar building, sauerkraut and cheese making, timber framing, blacksmithing, metal work, hand-built pottery, Intarsia (pieced wood) Christmas ornaments, canvas tent construction and a long list of other subjects.
