RABIES ALERT: Clarion County Raccoon, Venango County Fox Test Positive for Rabies

Two separate rabies alerts have been issued in Clarion County and Venango County.

Clarion County Raccoon Tests Positive for Rabies

Location: Eckel Drive, Lucinda, Washington Township, Clarion County
Summary: A man walked into his barn during the day and found a raccoon with porcupine quills in its face growling at him. The man shot the raccoon and submitted it to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory where it tested positive for rabies
Exposure: No humans or domestic animals were exposed to the raccoon.

Venango County Fox Tests Positive for Rabies

Location: Neiltown Road, Pleasantville, Allegheny Township, Venango County
Summary: A man found a grey fox in his pasture attacking his horse. The man shot the fox and submitted it to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory where it tested positive for rabies.
Exposure: One currently vaccinated horse was exposed to the fox. The horse will receive a booster vaccine and be quarantined for 90 days. No humans were exposed to the fox.

Pennsylvania law requires all dogs and non-feral cats three months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. Booster vaccinations must be administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity. Failure to comply with the law may result in a fine of up to $300.
