Pitt’s Mattson Selected to Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game

YARMOUTH, Mass. – Pitt rising junior Isaac Mattson has been selected to represent his summer league team, the Chatham Anglers, in the 2016 Friendly’s Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game.

The event, set to take place on Chatham’s home turf, Veteran’s Field, on Saturday, July 23 at 6:05 p.m.

Mattson has been stellar out of the bullpen for the Anglers, tossing 21.2 innings of relief in nine outings, boasting a minuscule ERA of 1.66. He has allowed just 21 hits, four runs and three walks, while striking out 18. Additionally, the Harbor Creek, Pa., native has competed to a record of 2-1, also earning a save.

“It is indeed a great honor for, not only Isaac, but for our program, to have him represent Pitt baseball and the University of Pittsburgh in the prestigious Cape Cod All-Star Game,” said Pitt skipper Joe Jordano. “Isaac has worked incredibly hard and has set a standard by which our other pitchers live by, so it is not surprising that he has earned this recognition. I am very proud of him.”

A 6’3” righty, Mattson will enter his junior season as a veteran in the bullpen for the Panthers. He has appeared in 39 contents for Pitt, competing to an ERA of 3.90 and a mark of 3-1, adding one save. In his 64.2 career innings of work at Pitt, he has fanned 68 batters, allowing just 28 earned runs. In 2016, he struck out 31, allowing just 33 hits and five walks.

Mattson is one of two Anglers selected to compete for the East Division and is the lone Panther still competing in the Cape League. Teammate Matt Pidich opened the season with the Anglers, wrapping up the summer with 5.2 innings of work in six outings. Former teammate Charles Leblanc was slated to lace up with Chatham, but opted to sign a professional contract with the Texas Rangers after being selected in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Nick Yarnall was also set to compete in the Cape League as a member of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, but elected to forego his senior season to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
