Students ran interactive booths on a number of health-related subjects including diabetes, eye protection, kidney disease, salmonella prevention, and sleep health.

The fair is part of a community health project required of the Clarion County Career Center’s senior-level practical nursing students. The project involves community service and involvement and has been ongoing for five years.

Students presented their projects to one another before setting up in the mall. Their topics were based on objectives established by Healthy People 2020, a national health promotion and prevention initiative sponsored by the U.S. government.

“I thought that it was cool that we all presented because I learned a lot from other people’s projects. It was really knowledgeable,” said Ashley MacKinlay.

MacKinlay’s project covered hearing loss prevention. She handed out ear plugs at her booth, which were donated by the glass plant in Brockway.

Laurel Eye Clinic also donated safety glasses for an eye protection booth.

MacKinlay and other students said they learned about subjects that they can use in the professional field, and they were glad to see people taking interest in their booths.
