Oil City Police Department Defuse Suicidal Man’s Plan to Shoot Police, Shoot Himself

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) — Oil City Police were called to the Northside Country Fair last evening for an armed standoff.

Officers responded to a call around 11:30 p.m. of a suicidal male with a handgun.

Chief Robert Wenner, of the Oil City Police Department, told exploreVenango.com that officers were able to control the situation. The male relinquished his handgun, and he was taken into custody in an incident that appears to be a “Suicide by Cop” situation.

The incident was reported to the OCPD by family members.

Family members told OCPD that the male “planned to shoot himself but couldn’t do it, so he was creating a situation where he was going to be shot by police. His plan was to shoot police and then, as a result, be shot by police,” according to Chief Wenner.

Chief Wenner said the situation was determined to be a “mental health incident.”

A witness at the scene stated, “It was perfectly clear from watching those officers work that they were well trained for the event and that in the face of a very serious situation that involved no small amount of personal jeopardy for each and all of them, they were fully equipped to resolve it peacefully and damned nearly placidly.”

“I’m certainly no expert on the subject of public policing tactics and the practical application thereof, but I think I probably just saw one of the most successful police actions that anyone — whether law enforcement or civilian — could hope to see.”

The name of the suspect was not released.

No other details are available at this time.

The incident is still under investigation.
