Evelyn L. Whitling

Evelyn L. Whitling, 95, formerly of Seneca, died at home on August 12, 2016, in South Park, PA, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law.

Born on August 7, 1921, in Coal Glen, Jefferson County, she was the youngest daughter of Charles and Janet Hynd Grinnen.

Mrs. Whitling was married for sixty-five years to Willis E. Whitling, the love of her life, whom she met at a square dance when she was fifteen, becoming his bride on September 10, 1937, a month after her sixteenth birthday. Mr. Whitling preceded her in death fourteen years ago. Both were lifelong members of the Church of the Nazarene, first in Oil City; then in Stuart, FL; and finally in Bethel Park, PA.

Mrs. Whitling was a devout Christian who lived out her faith in service to others. Mr. Whitling led building projects on mission fields in various countries, including Costa Rica, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, and South Africa, with Mrs. Whitling by his side, heading up the cooking and feeding of the team of workers that accompanied them. She was also known for her beautiful soprano voice, caring heart, sweet temperament, and passion for playing and watching golf.

Surviving are her son, David (Claudia) Whitling of University Place, WA, and her daughter, Patricia (Kenneth) Culbertson of South Park, PA; nine grandchildren: Tricia, Erich (Carolyn), and Jason Alsbaugh; Melissa (Terry) Wise and Hollis Whitling; Kelly (Charles) Tatum, Derek (Jessica) Culbertson, and Erin Culbertson; and Joshua (Emily) Whitling; six great-grandchildren: Jared Alsbaugh and Brynn (Tyler) Adams, Noah and Kenna Tatum, Ethan and Olivia Culbertson; and a great-great granddaughter, Alexis Adams.

Preceding her in death in addition to her husband and parents were a son, James Whitling; a daughter, Judith Alsbaugh; a grandson, Matthew Whitling; and her siblings, Daisy, Lucille, Alice, Irene, Charles, Janet, and a baby brother.

A memorial service will be held at the South Hills Church of the Nazarene, 5601 Library Rd., Bethel Park, PA, on Saturday, September 10, at 3:30 p.m. with Dr. Kenneth Culbertson officiating. Interment will be in Brandon Cemetery.
