Betty J. (Smalley), Winters

Betty J. (Smalley) Winters, 59, of Chambersbur and formally of Dempseytown, died August 31, 2016, at Hershey Medical Center after a short illness.

She was born October 23, 1956, in Oil City, to Billy O. and Shirley (Deeter) Smalley.

Betty graduated from Oil City High School in 1974.

She has been an on-and-off resident of the Oil City and Titusville area.

She was previously employed by Maryland Cup, K-Mart of Chambersburg, and sold Avon.

Betty was known for her kind spirit, great generosity, and an endearing feisty nature.

Everyone admired her green thumb, and was amazed by her beautiful house plants.

In 2005, Betty suffered from a stroke, which returned her to Chambersburg, as an independent resident of The Village of Laural Run.

Everyone there knew Betty. She made her rounds at the facility, and loved helping others, often assisting them with their pets, or playing bingo.

When she wasn’t helping, she enjoyed playing bingo herself, playing cards, doing puzzles, weekly trips to Walmart, and other road trips from the facility.

On game days, Betty would be found watching the Baltimore Orioles.

She married James I. Winters in Dempseytown, on June 8, 1974.

Jim preceded her in death on May 17, 1995.

Betty loved the Lord and is now reunited with Jim, and so many others who have gone before.

Betty loved her sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and extended family.

It was a sad day if there wasn’t a phone call from those boys to their mother, and she was rarely disappointed.

She is survived by James I. Winters, wife, Karen of Chambersburg; Joshua J., wife, Beth, of Bronx, N.Y.; and Matthew C., of Butler; grandchildren, Austin, Sierra, Eli, and new baby, Ava.

She is also survived by three sisters: Patricia (William) Hunt, of Wallaceville; Mary (Arthur) Kellogg, of Dempseytown; Brenda (Fred) Niederriter, of Venus; two brothers, Thomas Smalley, of Masaryktown, Fla., and Robert Smalley, of Titusville; and sister-in-law, Charlene Winters, of Shippensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, parents, and brothers, Gary and Fredrick Smalley.

There will be a graveside service at 10 a.m., on Saturday, at Salem United Brethren Church Cemetery, in Chambersburg. Interment to follow the service.
