Man Faces Felony Theft Charges After Allegedly Stealing Two Vehicles in Porter Township

PORTER TWP., Pa. (EYT) — A 25-year-old man is facing two counts of felony theft and related charges stemming from an incident that occurred in Porter Township, Clarion County.

Online court documents indicate Clarion-based State Police filed criminal charges against 25-year-old Joshua Stuart Colwell, of Kittanning.

According to a criminal complaint, around 9:10 a.m. on July 24, PSP Clarion was contacted by a male victim who reported that his black 2007 Toyota Tacoma was stolen overnight from his driveway on Huber Road, in Porter Township, New Bethlehem, Pa. He also reported that a white 2001 Chevrolet Astro van was sitting across the roadway.

The complaint states that as Trooper Norbert, of PSP Clarion, was investigating the incident, a vehicle pulled up to the scene with another male victim in reference to the white van. The second victim advised that the white van showed up at his garage located on South Reidsburg, in Porter Township, New Bethlehem, and the driver got out of the vehicle and went inside the garage.

The second victim said that the driver did not stay in the garage long. The driver then came back outside and got back into the white van. (The victim’s mother saw a taller man get out of the van; she stated that he looked like he was wearing a brown coat.) As the second male victim was going to the garage, the white van pulled out, and he attempted to follow it. Although he passed the van intermittently on side roads, he never caught up to it. The white van evaded him and sped off. He said this went on for about an hour, the complaint indicates.

The white van was found by the first victim’s residence, the complaint continues.

Victim three — the owner of the white van — was contacted. He stated that he last saw his vehicle when he left it at a friend’s house on Shirey Road around 6:00 p.m. on Friday and that he left the keys in the van so that his friend could move it if he needed to, according to the complaint.

The complaint states that the Toyota truck was possibly seen two to three times in the Ford City and Kittanning areas, and on August 26, the first victim saw his Toyota truck in the Ford City area and advised PSP Kittanning.

According to the complaint, there were two people in the Toyota Tacoma, and Joshua Stuart Colwell admitted to stealing it.

Court documents indicate following the investigation, a criminal complaint was filed against Colwell in District Judge Jeffrey C. Miller’s office.

He was arraigned at 11:00 a.m. on September 1, in front of Judge Miller on the following charges:

  • Criminal Trespass — Enter Structure, Felony 3
  • Theft By Unlawful Taking — Movable Property, Felony 3 (two counts)
  • Receiving Stolen Property, Felony 3
  • Driving Without a License, Summary
  • Driving While Operating Privilege Suspended Or Revoked, Summary
  • Careless Driving, Summary
  • Reckless Driving

Unable to post $5,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Armstrong County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on October 11 with Judge Miller presiding.
