John W. Scanlon

He was predeceased by his wives, Gladys M. (Cosgrove) Scanlon and Norma B. (Beaty) Scanlon. Born in Kane, PA and raised in Franklin, PA. he was the eldest son of Michael F. and Mayme E. (Sieger) Scanlon.

He began his career, of 43 years, with Buckeye Pipeline Company as a telegrapher and retired in 1980 as Director of Oil Movements. His love of telegraphy carried over into his retirement and his enjoyment of ham radio allowed him to renew friendships from his Signal Corps days of World War II. As a Master Sergeant in the Army Signal Corps, he participated in the invasion of North Africa and Italy. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star. He served his country once again, as the Director of Transportation, Region 3, of the Petroleum and Gas Unit of the National Defense Executive Reserve from 1967 — 1980.

He was the father of seven children: John M. (Sue) Scanlon, Cleveland, OH; Robert L. (Bonnie) Scanlon, Tallahassee, FL; Patricia A. (Dr. Andrew Pollack) Scanlon, Maple Glen, PA; Paul W. (Judy) Scanlon, Butler, PA; Edward J. Scanlon, Wyndmoor, PA; Ianthe H. McCrea (Paul Stone), Houston, TX, and Hugh M. (Theresa) McCrea, Houston, TX. Grandfather of 13, and great grandfather of 15.

He was predeceased by his brother George R. Scanlon, Franklin PA; sister Verona L. Croft of West Palm Beach, FL, and granddaughter Gillian B. Scanlon, Butler, PA.

Graveside Services with military honors will be held on Friday, Nov. 25, 2016 at 1:30 PM in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA. Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
