CU Tennis Wins Season Opener

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Clarion women’s tennis team claimed a victory in their season opener on Tuesday, as the Golden Eagles defeated Penn State-Altoona by a 6-3 score on the road.

Clarion (1-0) will open the home season a week from today when they host Alfred at Campbell Courts.

The top of the lineup proved to be the key to defeating the Nittany Lions, as the top two doubles teams and the top three singles players all recorded on the day. Alivia Arnold, Maria Snyder and Michelle Petrilla all went 2-0, winning their respective singles and doubles matches.

Arnold and Snyder teamed together to win the No. 1 doubles match against Michelle Colucci and Madelyn Seidel, taking it by an 8-3 scores. Petrilla and Allison Probst beat Brayley Lewis and Kate Hugendubler in a tiebreaker, winning 9-8 to take two of three doubles matches.

Arnold earned a straight sets win over Colucci at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 6-1, and Snyder dominated Lewis to the tune of a 6-1, 6-0 score. Petrilla got past Hugendubler 6-2, 6-2, and freshman Katie Benson earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Taylor Stoudnour at No. 4 singles.
