Community Learning Workshop Celebrates Grand Re-Opening at 800 Center Tomorrow

CLARION, Pa. – The Community Learning Workshop is hosting a Grand Re-Opening on Thursday, September 29, at their new location in the 800 Center in Clarion.

Clarion University President Dr. Karen Whitney will cut the re-opening ribbon and say a few words to kick off the event at 4:00 p.m.

There will be a live local student band, games, activities, food, and prizes.

Dr. Leah Chambers and Dr. Rich Lane – the Clarion University professors who founded and co-direct the Learning Workshop, which provides free homework help, tutoring and educational programs to learners of all ages from Clarion and the surrounding areas – report that the move will allow them to expand their daily operations.

The Workshop has served the community and its students for the past three years, and, with over 1,000 visits last spring alone, the larger facility in the 800 Center will allow them to better serve more students on a daily basis.

At the end of the Spring 2016 semester, the Workshop was filled with anywhere from 15 to 25 local students daily for homework help and tutoring, which at times was difficult in the smaller space.

The larger space will make it easier for Chambers, Lane, and their classes and volunteers to accommodate their growing number of students and to provide more evening educational programs, such as the Spanish Language Workshops and Team Read Nights that have been popular in the past two years.

Chambers and Lane appreciate the support that they have received from the community since the Learning Workshop opened in 2013, and they look forward to continuing the serve the community for years to come. They welcome back all their regulars and any new-comers who will join them.

The Learning Workshop, which is staffed entirely by student and community volunteers, provides all of its services free of charge.

Community members who wish to learn about workshop services, events and programs should contact Chambers and Lane by calling 814-226-4041 or sending an email to Clarion537@gmail.com.

The Community Learning Workshop (formerly at 537 Main Street) is located in the 800 Center, on the lower-level next to the Clarion Center for the Arts.
