Clarion University ‘Media Day’ Showcases Student Organizations

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – Clarion University students turned up the radio and welcomed Autumn Leaf Festival-goers during their annual “Media Day” held in Memorial Park gazebo on September 29.

“All of the organizations of the Department of Communication at Clarion University are joining together today to promote their activities — what they do during the semester — just to get the word out,” said Casey McCauley, a senior communication student from Slippery Rock.

Six student media organizations gathered in the gazebo on Thursday with copies of the latest edition of The Clarion Call newspaper and music from an online stream of WCUC-FM 91.7, the student radio station.

Other organizations present included:

  • Eagle Media
  • Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)
  • American Advertising Federation
  • National Broadcasting Society

McCauley, who acts as both PRSSA secretary and features editor of The Clarion Call, said members of the community were eager to learn about Clarion University student media. She said the student newspaper has been covering both hard-hitting stories and Autumn Leaf festivities.

“We’ve been covering the strike, and we’ve been talking to the APSCUF president,” McCauley explained. “We are all covering the Autumn Leaf Festival including Media Day, Cultural Nights, the parade, and craft day.”

WCUC-FM has been thriving due to recent technology updates in the department.

Adrieanna Sciarrino, a sophomore communication student from Pittsburgh, streamed the student radio station live from the gazebo. Online streaming is a new addition to the radio station this semester. Anyone can listen by searching WCUC-FM on the mobile app and website “Tune In.”

Sciarrino, the music director at WCUC-FM, said “Media Day” allows the student organizations time to gather and visit with one another outside of their busy school schedules.

“It’s nice to hang out with peers and get our name out in the community,” Sciarrino said.

Sophomore communication student Quincy Nolan, of Warren, expressed the sense of family surrounding student media organizations on campus. Nolan works as president of PRSSA and entertainment editor at The Clarion Call.

“There’s a really big sense of family and community out here, spreading the word about communication and all of the ways you can get involved,” commented Nolan.
