Baughman’s Still Recovering from Fire; Continues to Serve Community with Open Market

MARIENVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — Baughman’s Market — a staple in the Marienville community since 1892 — has found a unique way to continue to serve the area after a fire destroyed the store earlier this year.

An outdoor market has been set up on the store’s original premises following a March 4 structure fire that left the building in disrepair.

On the night of March 4, emergency responders were dispatched to Baughman’s Meat Market, where heavy clouds of smoke were billowing from the structure.

Flames engulfed the entire building before the fire was able to be put under control around midnight.

Police at the scene said the fire originated on the second floor, but the exact cause remains unknown.

Since then, the market has been demolished and cleared away, leaving a large gravel lot for Baughman’s Market to open as an outdoor shop.

John Baughman, manager of Baughman’s Market, told exploreClarion.com, “The locals miss the meat market.”

He said it was a part of the Marienville community.

John’s parents owned Baughman’s Meat Market since the 1960’s and ran it as a meat, produce, and grocery shop. John has worked at the market since he was a child.

Tentative plans to rebuild it will begin next spring.

While the temporary outdoor shop does not offer meat products, it sells items including cider, flowers, local honey, and seasonal produce, which is sourced from Buffalo, New York, twice weekly.

Locals come to the market on a regular basis; however, the autumn season brings out a new group of customers — who John refers to as “leaf peepers,” or visitors from the surrounding region who come to see the fall foliage.

“The market will remain open until the snow flies,” John explained.

Until then, tourists can visit Baughman’s Market on the PA Great Outdoors “Fantastic Forests Fall Driving Tour,” which runs through Forest County and includes nine stops.

The tour runs 82.3 miles and takes two hours and 15 minutes to complete. Tourists can stop by Baughman’s Market and make trips to Sherman Memorial Lighthouse in Tionesta and the Cook Forest Fire Tower.

The market’s regular business hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., seven days a week.

Baughman’s Market is located at 119 Cherry Street, Marienville, Pa.
