CLARION, Pa. — The Clarion County YMCA has a new Youth Sports Coordinator.

Michael Brown, who has spent his career working with sports teams of all levels — including nine years as the Clarion University Head Baseball Coach – will start his new position at the Y in October.

Brown has an extensive sports background. While employed at Redbank Valley School District, Brown taught health and physical education, was the Driver’s Ed Instructor, and also served as the athletic director from 2000 through his retirement in August 2007.

Brown is best known for his time at Redbank Valley where he spent 25 years as the boys’ basketball coach, 23 as an assistant football coach, 19 as the head track and field coach, and eight as the baseball manager.

After his retirement from Redbank Valley, Brown continued his involvement in sports by serving as the Clarion University Head Baseball Coach and teaching coaching courses at CUP, where he recently retired after nine years.

The YMCA Youth Sports Coordinator is responsible for managing the Clarion County YMCA’s popular youth sports programs, reaching over 700 local children throughout the year.

Clarion County YMCA Director Jesse Kelley said Brown’s extensive background has prepared him for his role and noted that Brown brings a wealth of experience to the program.

“Coach Brown has decades of experience working with sports and youth, and I couldn’t be more pleased to have someone with his high character mentoring our youth,” noted Kelley.

“It is an honor to serve in this position, and I am really looking forward to working with Clarion County’s youth,” said Brown. “This is an exciting new chapter for me, and I am thrilled to be a part of the Y.”

“I hope that my experience and skills will enhance the program at the YMCA.” he said.

Coach Brown will begin by coordinating 5th and 6th Grade Basketball, beginning in November. Registrations for this program will be accepted through October 22 with a $5.00 savings to allow players to learn under Coach Brown.

Brown lives in Clarion with his wife, Diana. The Browns have three daughters, Cari Harmon, Erin Hunsberger, and Moira Shingledecker, three son-in-laws, Jim Harmon, Marc Hunsberger, and Daniel Shingledecker, and five grandchildren.
