BROOKVILLE, Pa. (D9sports) — In what is quickly becoming one of the hottest KSAC boys’ basketball rivalries, Clarion-Limestone used a quick 17-0 second-quarter run to spearhead a 61-57 win over Union in the opening round of the Brookville Tip-off Tournament Friday.

The Lions, who beat Union three out of four times last year but lost in the District 9 1A quarterfinals, came out slow against the Knights Friday night and trailed 24-10 after one quarter thanks in large part to 16 points from Union star Lucas Bowser.

But that deficit didn’t last long, as C-L scored the first 17 points of the second quarter in just 2:51 thanks to the play of senior Dan Callen and freshman Deion Deas.

Deas getting an opportunity to Shine in the absence of sophomore Ian Callen (injury — out until January) hit a pair of 3-pointers during the run and score eight of the 17 points, while Dan Callen, Ian’s older brother, had the other nine.

Dan Callen finished the night with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Deas added 16 points.

Callen talked about the win.

C-L built its lead to 35-29 at halftime before Union tied the game at 39 three minutes into the second half on a putback by Bowser, who finished with a game-high 27 points to go with nine rebounds.

The Lions, though, opened a six-point, 48-42, lead at the end of three quarters and got the advantage to 10, 54-44, on a Julian Laugand basket with 4:59 to play.

Union didn’t go away and got within one on a Gavin Hawk basket with 35.1 seconds to play, and the Knights got the ball back down two, 59-57, with just under 20 seconds to play.

A shot, however, by Dana Logue with 8.4 seconds left was off the mark, and Laugand hit two free throws to seal the victory.

Hawk finished with 11 points, while Logue had six points and 10 rebounds and Kolby Montgomery nine points.

C-L will play Brockway, an 83-60 winner over Brookville, in the title game Saturday with Union taking on Brookville in the consolation contest.
