CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — It’s nearly time for a long-standing tradition to be held once again in Clarion County.

On Sunday, the Seneca Rocks Audubon Society will conduct the 30th Annual Clarion Christmas Bird Count.

The Audubon Society, along with other groups, use information collected across the country to help determine the health of bird populations and possible conservation measures.

The 117-year-old count is the longest-running wildlife count in the U.S., and there is no fee to be involved.

Counts will take place within 15-mile diameter count circles.

The Clarion count circle has the Clarion railroad trestle as the center and includes Clarion, Shippenville, Knox, Strattanville, Sligo, Callensburg, Curlsville, Marianne, Oak Grove, and Reidsburg.

Teams of counters are assigned to each section that are divided within the circle.

Gary Edwards, who has belonged to the Seneca Rocks chapter for many years, is the count compiler.

He coordinates the assignments based on individual preference and birding experience.

For those who can’t join a field team, they can report birds at their feeders.

For those interested in participating, they can check the Seneca Rocks website at https://www.senecarocksaudubon.org.

Click on Go Birding, then choose Bird Counts, Christmas Bird Count, and the map of Clarion County Circle.

Arrangements must be made with the feeder watch coordinator who is Seneca Rocks member Deb Freed.

Interested persons and potential participants may contact Edwards at 814-676-3011 or Freed at 814-226-4719.

Planning for the count will be held at tonight’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Clarion Free Library.
