WARREN CO., Pa. (EYT) — Warren-based State Police say a fatal crash occurred yesterday on State Route 59 (Kinzua Road), at Black Bear Lane, in Mead Township, Warren County.

According to police, this crash occurred around 11:55 a.m. as a vehicle — driven by 78-year-old Eugene G. Schwanke, of Warren, Pa. — was traveling westbound on State Route 59 and approached an unmarked utility work area.

Police say Schwanke failed to see the flagger — 46-year-old Michael L. Robertson, of Waterford, Pa. — who was standing on or near the westbound shoulder. The right front of the vehicle impacted Robertson, who was thrown into a nearby lawn.

Robertson was airlifted to UPMC Hamot in Erie where he succumbed to his injuries several hours later.

Schwanke was not injured.

The crash investigation is ongoing at this time.
