HAWTHORN, Pa. (EYT) — Five children and two adults escaped injury Tuesday afternoon after a van they were riding in crashed on Route 28 near Hawthorn.

Although New Bethlehem Police have not yet released names, according to Curt Kiehl, Hawthorn Fire Department Assistant Chief, the van, believed to be a older model Caravan, was traveling north on Route 28 near Mayport, one-half mile north of Hawthorn, when it lost control on the slush-covered road.

The vehicle traveled off the road, hit an embankment and rolled over.

“Two bystanders, one a retired State Police Trooper, had everyone out by the time we arrived, but they were all very lucky and everyone is okay,” Kiehl said.

According to Clarion County 911 Director Ron Wolbert, they received the call at 12:23 p.m. and units were dispatched at 12:25 p.m.

In addition to New Bethlehem Police and Hawthorn Volunteer Fire Department, Clarion Hospital EMS Station 4 and the New Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Emergency Medical Technicians checked everyone for possible injuries before releasing them to leave.

Leadbetter Towing removed the van from the scene.

It is believed that everyone in the van was wearing seat belts or were in child safety seats.
