Tionesta Man Who Was Found Not Guilty of Child Sexual Assault Accused of Perjury

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — A Tionesta man is facing new charges after he allegedly lied under oath while he was on trial in the Clarion County Court of Common Pleas in December of 2016.

Clarion-based State Police filed the following charges on January 11 against Clinton James Shanafelt, 46, of Tionesta, for statements he made on December 1, 2016:

– Perjury, Felony 3
– False Swearing — Official Proceeding, Misdemeanor 2

According to a criminal complaint filed by Trooper Rodney Hotchkiss, of Clarion-based State Police, Shanafelt was on trial in front of President Judge James Arner. Assistant District Attorney Drew Welsh was trying the case where Shanafelt was charged with Corruption of Minors, Indecent Assault, and Harassment.

When Shanafelt was asked by his defense attorney if he had ever been accused of similar crimes, Shanafelt said he had not.

State Police then did a criminal history check and discovered that in April of 2014, an investigation by State Tpr. Patrick Berggren and now retired Tpr. David Sprankle was performed where Shanfelt was accused by two known juvenile females of committing the crimes of Rape, Aggravated Indecent Assault, and Indecent Assault.

Shanafelt was found not guilty in the December 2016 trial.

Even so, he is currently lodged in the Clarion County Jail, serving one to three years for his role in the production of Methamphetamine.
