Clarion University Roundup: Diving Competes Twice Over Weekend

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Clarion University women’s diving team was in action twice over the weekend.

On Sunday, the Golden Eagles were at the Youngstown State Invite.

Christina Sather took the top spot in the one-meter portion, finishing with a final score of 251.15. Emma Kehn took fifth with a mark of 231.25, while Kate Nedrow and Maranda Leidwinger took ninth and tenth overall, respectively. Autumn Fotta rounded things out for CU in the one-meter with a final score of 158.70.

Kehn also snagged a third-place finish in the three-meter portion, recording a final score of 229.65, while Sather and Amanda O’Kane took seventh and eighth place with scores of 207.05 and 109.15, respectively. Fotta and Leidwinger also took part in the three-meter, finishing in the ninth and tenth overall spots.

On Saturday, Clarion was at home vs. West Chester.

The Golden Eagles combined to take the top six spots in the one-meter competition, with first overall going to Emma Kehn by a final score of 263.18. Sather finished in second with 254.03 while Kate Nedrow took third with 233.03. Fotta and Amanda O’Kane finished it off, taking the four and five spots by scores of 211.65 and 204.60, respectively.

Clarion enjoyed an equally impressive performance in the three-meter portion, with its five divers again teaming up to take the top five spots in the final standings. First overall belonged to Sather with a final mark of 264.23, while Kehn followed closely behind in second with 260.03. Fotta (227.85), O’Kane 224.10), and Amanda Leidwinger (215.93) rounded it off with the third, fourth, and fifth-place finishes.

MEN’S DIVING

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Clarion University men’s swimming and diving team took part in the YSU Invite hosted by Youngstown State Sunday afternoon in Ohio. The Blue and Gold will return to action starting February 16th when the Golden Eagles head to York, Pa. for PSAC Championships.

Collin Vest took top marks in the three-meter dives, finishing with a final score of 265.65. Fellow Eagles Cary Johns and Mike Allison took the two and three spots as well, ending with final scores of 263.05 and 241.85, respectively.

The trio also took all three tops spots in the one-meter portion. Vest again took first overall with 274.50 while Johns took second with 266.0 and Allison third with 210.20.

On Saturday, Johns took first overall in the one-meter dives, finishing with a final score of 305.10. Vest and Allison finished second and third, respectively, with scores of 298.05 and 248.63.

The trio also combined to take the top three spots in the three-meter portion, with Vest taking first thanks to a final mark of 318.00. Johns finished in second at 298.05 while Allison took third with 257.18.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO MERCYHURST

ERIE, Pa. – The Clarion women’s basketball team returned a significant piece from injury today, but was unable to overcome one of the toughest teams in the PSAC in falling 90-50 to the Mercyhurst Lakers on the road on Saturday. The Golden Eagles (13-10, 10-7) will return to Clarion for three straight home games.

Tyra Polite came close to a double-double against the Lakers, finishing with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds while also adding three assists and two blocked shots. Delrika Jones-Carey was not far behind her with totals of nine points and six boards. Amesha Harden-Pullium had the team-high with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

Mercyhurst controlled the tide of the game with an electric shooting performance in the first half, going 8-of-11 from three-point range and finishing 62.5 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The only Golden Eagle lead came on the first makes of the game, when Jordan Bekelja made two free throws less than a minute into play to put her team ahead 2-0. The Lakers took it from there, embarking on a 10-0 run to put the Golden Eagles behind the eight-ball.

Clarion trailed 25-14 at the end of the first quarter but briefly pulled within a handful of possessions in the second quarter, starting with a jumper by Bekelja 19 seconds into the period. Harden-Pullium scored in the paint to make it 25-18 with 8:00 left in the half, and later drained a three-pointer to keep the score within 28-21. Mercyhurst responded with a 16-1 run, though, taking a 44-22 lead with 2:34 left in the half, and entered the locker room at the half leading 52-26.

The deficit hovered around 25 points throughout most of the third quarter, but the Lakers kept the pressure on and stretched it to 30 early in the fourth. The final deficit reached 40 points on the final possession of the game, after a made free throw by Mercyhurst.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD AT MOUNT UNION

MOUNT UNION, Ohio — The Clarion University track & field team took part in the annual Mount Union Jim Wuske Invitational Saturday afternoon in Ohio. The invite featured the Golden Eagles squaring off against over a dozen different schools from the tri-state area. The Blue and Gold will return to action on February when they head to Edinboro for the Last Chance Invitational.

Taylor Donia started off the day on the right foot, snagging a seventh-place finish in the 3000 M run with a final time of 11:12.35. Hayley Redmond finished right behind her with a final time of 12:02.36, good enough for 21st overall.

The 800 M relay team of Tatiana Cloud, Courtney Corban, Jessica Shomo, and Amanda Batey kept the momentum going with a third-place finish, running a final time of 1:48.10, less than two seconds off the top mark won by Walsh. Cloud and Corban also finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400 M dash, while Danielle Tarr rounded things out with a third-place finish in the 800 M run, running a final time of 2:25.93.

In the field events, Kari Steuer took fourth overall in the shotput, tossing a final mark of 12.45 on her fifth attempt. Katie Brest managed a tenth-place finish with a mark of 11.29. Lauryn Greggs also snagged a top-ten finish, jumping 1.42 M in the high jump, good enough for eigth.
