CUP’s Polite Named Second Team All-PSAC West; Hinderliter Snubbed for Rookie of the Year

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (EYT) — The PSAC announced its women’s basketball year-end award winners and all-conference teams Thursday with Clarion’s Tyra Polite earning a second-team All-PSAC West honor.

Polite ranked sixth in the PSAC in scoring at 15.7 points per game and averaged 2.4 3-pointer per contest while adding 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. A two-year player for the Golden Eagles, she had a career-high 34 points Jan. 6 against Mercyhurst at Tippin Gym hitting six 3-pointers in that game. She helped Clarion reach the PSAC playoffs for the first time in four years while securing a winning record (15-14) for the first time since 2010.

Meanwhile, Redbank Valley graduate Brooke Hinderliter, who won five PSAC West Rookie of the Week honors this year, was snubbed in her quest to be named the PSAC West Rookie of the Year despite having numbers that at least on the surface were considerably better than the winner, Michaela Barnes of Edinboro.

Hinderliter finished her rookie year as the PSAC leader in freshmen rebounding at 4.8 per game and second among freshmen in scoring at 10.5 points per game while adding 1.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game. She shot 40.7 percent from the field and 90.1 percent from the foul line while making 113 free throws, the sixth-most in a single season in Rock history. Her 71 offensive rebounds ranked eighth in the PSAC.

Barnes averaged 8.0 ppg to go with 1.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She shot 37.9 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line while making 56 charity shots.
