It’s a great way to spend some time outdoors by following the PA Fish & Boat Commission’s stocking trucks as they deliver their cargo to lakes and streams across the region.

Despite the fact that stockings are done mostly on weekdays, it can still be a fun activity for families to do. It’s not uncommon to see grandparents with the grandkids or second- and third-shift dads and their little ones helping haul buckets of fish to the water’s edge.

Fortunately, the state publishes a list of waterways that are on the stocking list and where their trucks will meet the local Waterways Conservation Officer before they begin stocking.

For those not entirely familiar with a particular area, the site also includes latitude and longitude readings that can be used in a GPS. And trust me, the Fish Commission guys are only too happy to see help waiting to stock fish.

If you are looking to get out and see the trout as they go into the water, here are a few places to start:

Clarion County

Friday, March 10, the stocking truck will meet at 11:15 a.m. in the parking lot at Rehobeth Church Road, just off exit 64 of Interstate 80. They will be stocking two streams, including Leatherwood Creek and three sections of Piney Creek.

Jefferson County

There are plenty of choices in the next few weeks. The first is at Cloe Lake near Punxsutawney. The stocking begins at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, March 9.

A week later, at 10:45 a.m., on Thursday, March 16, the meeting place is at the post office in Big Run on Route 119. Several streams will be stocked, including Big Run, Canoe Creek, East Branch Mahoning Creek, and Laurel Run.

Then, at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, March 17, the meeting place will be at the post office in Cool Spring, located off Route 36 between Brookville and Punxsutawney. That day, Little Sandy Creek, Five Mile Run, and Big Run will be stocked.

Forest County

At 11:30 a.m., on Thursday, March 16, the meeting place will be at the Mayburg Bridge on Route 666 to stock Tionesta Creek.

Then, at 11;00 a.m., on Monday, March 20, the meeting place will be at the Marienville Uni-Mart on Route 66 to stock Maple Creek and West Branch Millstone Creek.

Elk County

At 10:30 a.m., on Friday, March 17, the meeting place will be at the Medix Run Hotel to stock Medix Run.

Cameron County

At 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, March 22, the meeting place will be at the intersection of Routes 120 and 155 to stock Clear Creek, North Creek, and Sinnemahoning Portage Creek.

Then, at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 25, the meeting place will be at the Route 555 bridge in Driftwood to stock the Driftwood Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek.
