Local Citizens’ Group to Host Earth Day Events

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – A series of events celebrating Earth Day has been spearheaded by local citizens’ group Indivisible We Rise — West Central PA.

The first event will be an Earth Day celebration at the Clarion Free Library from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, April 22.

The free event co-sponsored by the Clarion Free Library will feature science activities, displays, art activities, story telling, and music.

Science educator Susan Zamzow is chairperson for the event.

According to Zamzow, “There will be activities for all ages to enjoy!”

At 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, April 23, a free showing of the film “Awake, a Dream from Standing Rock” will be held at the theater at the Suites on Main North along Route 322 on the Clarion University campus.

This film is a 2017 Tribeca award-winning documentary by Josh Fox, the producer of “Gasland.” The film chronicles how the Standing Rock Sioux captured world attention through their peaceful resistance.

This event, sponsored by Clarion University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Department and Indivisible We Rise, will be followed by a panel discussion.

To complete the Earth Day activities, Indivisible We Rise will sponsor a Clean-Up Day on the North Country Trail on Sunday, April 30.

Interested volunteers of all ages should meet at 9:30 a.m. at the trailhead off Route 322 at River Hill.

Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and bring water to drink. A lunch will be provided and Certificates of Appreciation will be given to all participants in recognition of their service.

The launch of this series of events took place when a group representing Indivisible We Rise visited the Clarion County Commissioners and presented a proclamation asking the county to officially recognize Earth Day 2017.

At their meeting on March 29, the Commissioners signed the document officially declaring Saturday, April 22, as a day dedicated to the protection of the Earth in Clarion County.

The Proclamation also announced the upcoming County recycling days as June 3 and September 16.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 in response to growing awareness of the impact of human activity on the environment. It has continued ever since as a day dedicated to promoting awareness of the need for environmental protection.
