Kennedy DeMatteis Leads Moniteau Softball Past Redbank Valley

WEST SUNBURY, Pa. (D9Sports) — The Moniteau softball team ran its record to 9-0 this season with a 10-0, five-inning win over Redbank Valley Friday afternoon at Moniteau High School.

The Lady Warriors got another stellar pitching performance from Kennedy DeMatteis, who in five innings allowed just a single hit to Lexi Holt while striking out nine. Kennedy also had a great game in the batter’s box going 3-for-4 with a double.

Cortney Claypoole and Amanda Dailey lead the way offensively as Claypoole went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and 3 RBIs and two runs scored. Dailey, who was inserted into the batting lineup, from her normal flex position also scored two runs while going 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.

The teams played scoreless through one inning as the Lady Bulldogs went 1-2-3. The Lady Warriors got a leadoff single from Gabby Stewart, but she was called out for leaving the base too soon. A two-out single by Kennedy DeMatteis and a double by Kristina DeMatteis, who had two doubles, put runners at second and third with two outs, but Alyssa Burkett was able to strikeout Sara Hull ending the threat.

Kennedy DeMatteis struck out the side in the top half of the second inning, and it was a little two-out lightning in the bottom half that got the ball rolling for Moniteau.

Dailey and Dolcey Shunk got things started with back-to-back two-out singles then Stewart hit them both home with a triple. Claypoole then went yard pushing the lead to 4-0 after two complete innings.

“Honestly, they love to hit with two outs,” Moniteau head coach Lennie Claypoole said. “The baserunning is easy. You just put the ball in play and anything can happen when you do that.

“They don’t even think about it. They just get more pumped up.”

Like his counterpart at Cranberry the day before, Redbank Valley head coach John Sayers said his team gave up too many runs with two outs.

“We gave up way too many runs with two outs today,” said Redbank head coach John Sayers. “They’re a great team and when we get two outs, we have to get the third.”

DeMatteis again struck out the side in the top of the third.

Hull and Megan Hepler lead off the bottom half with singles. After a popout by Kristin Auvil, Dailey doubled scoring Hull, and a sacrifice by Shunk pushed the lead 6-0 after three.

The Lady Bulldogs were finally able to threaten in the top of the fourth as Holt singled. Kaia Rearick hit into a fielder’s choice that left her at first and Holt out at second and she advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Kara Hicks ground out put Rearick at third, DeMatteis then hit Maycee Shumaker and Kaitlyn Shaffer loading the bases.

Redbank appeared to get on the scoreboard as Lauren Rearick ripped a ground ball into the right field grass where it scooped up and gunned to first by Dailey getting Lauren Rearick out and preventing Kaia Rearick from scoring ending the inning.

“That was big,” Lennie Claypoole said. “Usually, when you hit into the grass you’re kind of jogging down to first, but Amanda (Dailey) never gave up on the play and prevented the run from scoring too. Her performance was great. We tried to get her in the lineup, usually, she’s our flex, but I had a feeling she might hit today so when it came up to our DP spot I let her hit.”

Moniteau tacked on their 7th run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth as Kristina DeMatteis doubled and advanced to third on a throwing error by Shumaker. Sara Hull then hit a two-out single scoring DeMatteis.

“That’s why they’re a good team, we have to show up, and we have to play better ball ball than we did today,” said Sayers.

Becca Kunselman walked to begin the top of the fifth, but Kennedy proceeded to strikeout Lauren Smith and Alyssa Burkett then got a popout by Holt to close out the inning.

Moniteau ended the game after five innings as Kristin Auvil singled; Dailey’s ground out moved her to second. After Shunk had flown out, Stewart drilled a double that scored Auvil. Claypoole doubled scoring Stewart, and Kennedy DeMatteis put the icing on the cake by ripping one in the gap that scored Claypoole bringing the final score 10-0.

Redbank Valley fell to 6-2 on the year.
