Clarion/Mansfield Split in Baseball

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Mansfield and Clarion split a doubleheader Wednesday in Mansfield with Mansfield winning the opener 5-2 and falling 9-4 in the nightcap.

Clarion (11-16, 4-16 PSAC West) opened the doubleheader with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.

In the bottom of the second, Brady Mengel led-off the inning with a double before Eric Harms singled to put runners on the corners. Wes Custer drove a ball up the middle to score a run and Harms later scored on a balk to tie the game. Pena scored Custer to give Mansfield (20-22, 8-12 PSAC East) the 3-2 lead.

The Mountaineers tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning when Dio Infante doubled to the gap to score Taylor Hillson.

Joe Grober earned the win in relief, pitching 2.1 innings with no earned runs and three strikeouts. Tyler Guidos picked up his fourth save of the season in 1.2 innings of work.

Clarion struck first again in game two, with Tyler Falk drilling a solo home run before the Golden Eagles added two more runs to take a 3-0 lead.

The Mountaineers got one back in the bottom of the inning when Tanner Klein, playing against his hometown team, scored Peter Pena with an RBI single.

In the bottom of the second, a bases-loaded walk by Colby Schearer forced in a run then Hillson scored another with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

In the top of the sixth, Clarion pushed across two runs to regain the lead at 5-3.

Klein brought the Mountaineers within a run with a lead-off home run in the sixth. It was his fourth homer of the season.

The Eagles plated four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to take a 9-4 lead.

Thomas Connell got the win for Clarion pitching 1.1 innings in mid-relief. Bryce Zaparzynski took the loss.
