Clarion County Voter Turnout Low, But Not Unusual

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — Voter turnout was light for last week’s primary elections in Clarion County.

For the Tuesday, May 16 elections, unofficial numbers showed 25.9 percent, 5,258 of 20,250, registered voters cast ballots in Clarion County.

For Republicans, their turnout was 27 percent, with 3,511 of 12,703.

On the Democratic side, they had an unofficial count of 23 percent voting, including 1,748 of 7,547 registered.

Elections Director Cindy Callihan said the low turnout numbers have been typical for several years.

Forest County In Forest County, election officials pointed to a lack of competition in the local races and some of the roads being out of service because of bridge replacement work for its very low turnout of 21 percent.

“That’s very low for us,” Jean Ann Hitchcock, Director of Elections, said. “We usually have 40 to 50 percent turnout. But with some of the bridges being out for work and the lack of competitive races, that may explain it.”

The county has 3,315 registered voters, 1,743 Republicans and 1,258 Democrats. 707 cast ballots Tuesday.
