Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Route 666 Crash, Life Flighted to Erie Hospital

HOWE TWP., Pa. (EYT) — A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash that occurred on Friday afternoon on State Route 666, in Howe Township, Forest County.

According to Marienville-based State Police, around 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 9, 63-year-old Dennis J. Battersby, of Erie, was negotiating a sharp right hand curve in the roadway. Evidence at the scene indicated that Battersby crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic while in the turn. He proceeded to steer his 2011 Harley-Davidson Street Glide to the right half of the roadway and inadvertently overcompensated causing him to lose control of the motorcycle.

Police say the motorcycle overturned onto its right side, and the forward motion forced the motorcycle to rotate and overturn onto its left side. The motorcycle with Battersby and his passenger — 61-year-old Sheila A. Layden, of Erie — all came to a final rest on the paved portion of Route 666.

Battersby was life flighted to UPMC Hamot for suspected serous injuries.

Layden was not injured.

Both occupants were using motorcycle helmets.

Assisted at the scene by Marienville Volunteer Fire Department, Clarion County EMS, and Allegheny Life Flight.
