Man Falls Asleep Behind Wheel in Scrubgrass Township Crash

SCRUBGRASS TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A man who fell asleep behind the wheel crashed early Thursday morning on Interstate 80, in Scrubgrass Township, Venango County.

According to Franklin-based State Police, James Tons, 69, of Passaic, N.J., was driving a 2016 Ford Focus east on Interstate 80 in Scrubgrass Township around 1:08 a.m. on June 15, when he fell asleep and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway.

The car traveled off the left side of the road, hit an embankment, and then crossed the westbound lanes, continuing up an embankment on the other side before stopping.

Tons had suspected minor injuries. He was examined by Emlenton Ambulance but was not taken to the hospital.

A passenger in the car, Kevin Sutak, 61, of New York, N.Y., was not injured.

Both men were wearing their seat belts.

Tons was charged with a traffic violation.
