Devon LaurerCLARION, Pa. (EYT) – Devon Lauer made sure there is going to be a winner-take-all game in the Clarion Little League playoffs leading his upstart Pizza Pub squad to a 9-5 win over Burns & Burns Friday night at Paul A. Weaver Park.

With the Pub, which had two regular-season wins, needing a victory to force the winner-take-all title game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at Weaver Park, Lauer went 3-for-4 at the plate with a two-run triple and a two-run home run and also pitched a strong game allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

He was at his finest in the middle innings retiring eight straight Burns & Burns batters after allowing a two-run home run to Dawson Smail with one out in the third that cut the Pizza Pub lead to 5-3.

Lauer quickly got those two runs back for his team when the left-handed hitting, right-handed throwing player blasted a two-run shot to right field to start a four-run fourth inning that saw the Pub send nine men to the plate against Burns & Burns starter and loser Tanner Miller.

The Lauer homer in the inning was the second of five straight hits in the inning for Pizza Pub, who had seven hits in all in the frame and also scored runs on a wild pitch and an RBI single to center by pinch hitter Lucas Mitrosky to blow the game open.

On the mound, Lauer was rarely in trouble allowing a run in the first and the two-run homer in the third before finally running out of steam in the sixth when Dawson Smail doubled leading off, went to third on an error and scored following a walk to Bryce Brinkley when Derek Smail grounded out.

Dawson Smail of Burns & Burns had a home run, a double and two RBIs.

The Derek Smail at-bat ended Lauer’s evening, as he reached the 85-pitch limit. Kohen Kemmer relieved and have up an RBI single to Nick Aaron before getting the final two outs to force the game Saturday.

Offensively, Pizza Pub struck early and often scoring twice in the first and three times in the second to build a 5-1 lead.

The first four batters of the game reached for the Pub with Kemmer making it 1-0 with a single to center that scored Alex Garduno, who had singled to left leading off the game. Owen Kriebel then poked a sacrifice fly out to right to make it 2-0.

After Burns & Burns got a run back in the bottom of the inning on an infield single by Brinkley that scored Dawson Smail, who had reached third on a three-base error, Pizza Pub’s bats kept churning in the top of the second.

A leadoff single by Brady Pearce, the No. 9 hitter, got the inning rolling, and he went to second on a wild pitch and remained there when Garduno reached on an error. A wild pitch moved both moves up a base, and Lauer followed with his first big hit of the night, a two-run double to right. Lauer scored two batters later on a Kemmer single to center.

Kam Kerle, the No. 9 hitter for Burns & Burns got things started in the third for the home team with a base hit to right and went to second on a wild pitch before Dawson Smail blasted a home run to left-center field that hit the batting cage well beyond the fence.

But that was all the thunder Burns & Burns had until the sixth.
