National Weather Service Confirms Tornado in Shippenville

ELK TWP., Pa. (EYT) — The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh (NWS) has confirmed that a tornado touched down Monday night in Elk Township, Clarion County.

Crews from the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh were in Elk Township Tuesday morning to assess extensive storm damage in the area of Millerstown Road.

NWS Pittsburgh Warning Coordination Meteorologist Fred McMullen told exploreClarion.com that the tornado was rated an EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale with winds estimated up to 80 MPH.

The tornado’s path width was 60 Yards and its path length was 0.75 Miles, according to a release issued by the National Weather Service.

The tornado, which produced damaging winds that uprooted several trees, was accompanied by heavy downpours that drenched the area around 5:45 p.m.

The severe weather was confined to the Millerstown Road area, according to Clarion County EMA Coordinator Randall Stahlman.

Shippenville-Elk Township Volunteer Fire Department and Elk Township responded to the scene Monday to remove several downed trees on Millerstown Road.

Central Electric and Penelec were dispatched to repair downed electrical wires.

This is the fifth tornado to impact Clarion County in 2017.

No injuries were reported.
