Semi Driver Falls Asleep at Wheel in Foxburg Crash

FOXBURG, Pa. (EYT) — A 21-year-old tractor trailer driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a rock wall in Foxburg on Monday morning.

According to Clarion-based State Police, around 8:27 a.m. on June 19, Alex Messmer, of Hubbard, Ohio, was driving a 2017 Ford Freightliner south on Route 58 at a high rate of speed.

Police said Messmer failed to make a slight left-hand curve after falling asleep at the wheel. The vehicle left the roadway and hit a rock wall at the intersection of 38 Harvey Road.

After the initial crash, the truck continued along the roadside for about 500 feet before coming to a stop.

Messmer, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured.

He was charged with a traffic violation.

Hovis Towing removed the vehicle from the scene.
