No. 6: Karns City scores four in seventh to stun Chestnut Ridge in D5-8-9 Softball Title Game

A young 2017 Karns City softball team didn’t expect to find itself in position to capture a District title, but the Lady Gremlins took advantage of being the only 3A team in D9 and the lack of a District 8 (Pittsburgh City League) team to get a bye into the District 5-8-9 sub-regional title game against Chestnut Ridge, which won the District 5 portion of the bracket.

But the Lions appeared to be too much for the Lady Gremlins taking a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh while limiting Karns City to just two hits.

But Karns City scored four times in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead and then escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the inning to secure its second district title and its first since 2009 with the 5-3 win.

Kate Allen tied the game on a passed ball, and Katie Neff’s two-run single gave the Lady Gremlins a 5-3 lead.

Then in the bottom of the seventh after Chestnut Ridge loaded the bases with the one out,

That’s when Mackenzie Dunn came up with the play of the year catching a sinking line drive and then tagging out the runner who had come off third for a game-ending, title-clinching double play.

No. 5: Tori Obenrader has a School Year She Won’t Soon Forget

North Clarion junior Tori Obenrader made a strong case for the best female athlete in District 9 in 2016-17.

It started in volleyball when she helped lead the She-Wolves to the District 9 playoffs while being named KSAC First Team.

But that was just a warm up.

She was the best girls’ basketball player in District 9 and one of the top two or three in the state of Pennsylvania being named the D9Sports.com District 9 Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year and a Pennsylvania Sports Writers’ All-State selection.

Leading North Clarion to its first-ever KSAC and District 9 titles, Obenrader also helped the She-Wolves to the PIAA Elite Eight by averaging a District 9-leading 23.5 points per game to go with 15.8 rebounds per contest (second in D9), 3.2 assists per game, 2.0 steals per game and 1.0 blocks per game. In seven postseason games, she averaged 26.6 points and 15.9 rebounds per contest. For the year, she recorded 28 double-doubles in 29 games and at 15 or more rebounds 18 times with 20 or more seven times while also scoring over 40 points twice. She reached the 1,000-point (1,436) and 1,000-rebound (1,137) mark in the same season and scored a school-record 682 points to go with 457 rebounds.

But she wasn’t through yet.

In track and field season, Obenrader, a thrower, was named the KSAC co-Field MVP and won the District 9 Class 2A title in the shot put (40-4 ½ inches) while also qualifying for the PIAA meet in the discus and javelin taking third in the discus (113-1) and fourth in the javelin (122-2).

Obenrader talked about winning the shot put.

Continuing her fantastic season, Obenrader then finished sixth at the PIAA Class 2A meet in the shot put (40-2) and 10th in the javelin (126-1), one of four District 9 javelin throwers to finish in the Top 10.
