Raymond L. McElhattan

Raymond L. McElhattan, Sr., 94, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born on April 16, 1923, in St. Petersburg, PA, a son of the late Ward and Beulah (Van Guilder) McElhattan.

On 1950, he married Ruth Y. McElhattan, who survives.

Mr. McElhattan was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the 9th Air Force in Europe during WWII.

He was a graduate of Clarion State College with a degree in teaching English and Spanish. After graduation, he taught at St. Petersburg High School, St. Petersburg, PA. He left teaching and became an insurance claims adjuster for thirty-six years.

He attended the Woodland Avenue United Methodist Church. At the request of Rev. Roger Saunders, Mr. McElhattan started the Woodland Avenue Food Pantry and served in it for fourteen years.

In addition to his wife Ruth, surviving relatives include three sons, Raymond L. McElhattan, Jr. of Punxsutawney, Bruce W. McElhattan and wife Susan of Pittsburgh, and Kevin N. McElhattan of Pittsburgh; a daughter Kristin Crawford and husband Wes of Zelienople; three grandsons, David McElhattan and wife Swati of Chicago, John McElhattan and Matt of Chicago, and Alex Crawford and Carly of Pittsburgh; a sister Judy Switzer and husband Ted of Knox; two brothers, Earl McElhattan of Canal Fulton, OH, and Joe McElhattan and wife Barb of Emlenton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Beatrice Longnaker, Nancy Barnes, and Betty Randolph, and a brother Tom McElhattan.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at the Woodland Avenue United Methodist Church, 201 Woodland Avenue, Punxsutawney, PA, with Pastor Doug Wolfe officiating.

Interment will be held at a later date in Knox Cemetery.
