Pirates Promote Top Two Shortstop Prospects

PITTSBURGH (EYT) — The Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday promoted their top two shortstop prospects with Kevin Newman going from Class AA Altoona to Class AAA Indianapolis and Cole Tucker moving from Class A Bradenton to Altoona.

Newman, who will be 24 Aug. 4, was the Pirates No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft out of the University of Arizona. He was hitting .259 with four home runs, 18 doubles and four triples while driving in 30 for the Curve. In 343 at bats he had struck out just 40 times.

Tucker, who turned 21 July 3, was the Pirates No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft out of Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix. He was hitting .285 with four home runs, 15 doubles and six triples for Bradenton while driving in 32. He also stole 36 bases being caught 12 times.
