Local Man Places in Prominent Outdoor Writers’ Competition

ST. PETERSBURG, Pa. (EYT) — A St. Petersburg man has placed in The Outdoor Writers Association of America competition.

Andy Whitcomb, of St. Petersburg, was recognized as an award recipient during the 2017 OWAA Excellence in Craft Contests.

This annual awards program recognizes and honors the best work of outdoor communicators who are members of OWAA.

Whitcomb was awarded first place in the family participation/youth outdoor education category of the magazine contest for “Get Your Kids Excited about Fishing,” Boating World, May 2016. The family participation/youth outdoor education category recognizes excellence in communicating the value and enjoyment of family participation and youth education in the outdoors.

The prize money for this category was sponsored by Realtree.

Whitcomb also placed second in the family participation/youth outdoor education category of the blog contest for “Crafting New Lure Designs for Family Fishing,” www.TakeMeFishing.org, May 9, 2016. The family participation/youth outdoor education category recognizes excellence in communicating the value and enjoyment of family participation and youth education in the outdoors. The prize money for this category was sponsored by Realtree.

Third place in the family participation/youth outdoor education category of the photography contest for “A Hawg,” ICAST Show Guide, July 2016, was also awarded to Whitcomb. The family participation/youth outdoor education category recognizes excellence in communicating the value and enjoyment of family participation and youth education in the outdoors. The prize money for this category was sponsored by Realtree.

This year, 63 individuals took home nearly $15,000.00 in cash prizes.

About Whitcomb

Whitcomb is an avid angler and stressed out father of two, currently chasing steelhead, pike, and smallmouth bass in western Pennsylvania. He has a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Oklahoma State University, experience as a fisheries research technician with OSU, Iowa State University, and Michigan State University, as well as knowledge from assisting at fish hatcheries in Colorado and Iowa.
