June L. (Lucas) Reed, age 96, of Brookville, PA, passed away in the presence of her family, on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, in Florida.
June was born on May 29, 1921, in Bridgeport Connecticut, to the late Peter and Geneva (Dawsey) Lucas.
On October 23, 1944, she married Don Reed Sr., in New York City; Don preceded her in passing on September 4, 2013.
After High School, June received an Associate’s Degree in Secretarial Studies.
Most of her early married years she spent as a homemaker, taking care of her children, home, and Don. When the children were older and left home, June became a Bookkeeper, working for Parents and Friends, which was an organization that helped the mentally disabled.
She was a member of the Kirkman Independent Baptist Church, and she participated with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, (WCTU), making things that helped others in need.
She had a strong faith in God, she loved her church, pastor, and bible study.
June had many talents and she loved to quilt. She was part of various quilting groups in the Brookville area; she continued this hobby until she could no longer hold the tools.
She was also a talented seamstress. She made her children’s clothing when they were younger, and as they aged, she would sew gifts for them.
She loved to bowl with her husband and they were members of different bowling leagues.
June was quick to make friends because of her caring and affectionate personality. She carried a smile and she was ready to give a hug anywhere she went.
She was also a straight shooter in the sense that she was not afraid to call it like it was.
June was a strong woman, educated, and frugal.
These traits aided in her and Don’s ability to retire comfortably, enjoying the fruits of their labor on the land and in the home that they spent their final days in; she took care of this home right up to the end.
She was mentally and physically able throughout her whole life.
June loved her family, and they loved her back.
She is survived by 1 daughter; Donna (Ron) Murray of Florida; 1 son; David (the late Susan) Reed of California; 2 grandchildren; Cristin (Rick) Murray-Petzold; Shane (MaryBeth) Murray; 4 great-grandchildren; Zane Petzold, Lilly, Gabe, and Zach Murray.
In addition to her husband and parents, June is preceded in death by 1 sister; Doris O’Dwyer; and 1 son; Don Reed Jr.
June was in Florida with her entire family when she passed.
A blessing to be together at that time, and an opportunity to honor her conveniently.
Private family services were held in Florida.
Interment took place at the Richardsville Cemetery, Warsaw Twp., Jefferson Co., PA.
