Venango County Man Accused of Selling Cars with Altered VIN’s on Social Media

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) — An Oil City man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly destroyed vehicle identification numbers and sold the cars on social media.

According to court documents, at 11:50 a.m. on Thursday, August 10, 32-year-old Anthony Robert Kot, of Oil City, was arraigned in front of District Judge Andrew Fish on the following charges:

– Alteration or Destruction of Vehicle Identification Number, Felony 3
– Disposition of Vehicle or Vehicle Part With Altered Vehicle Identification Number, Felony 3
– Tamper Records Or Id-Writing, Misdemeanor 1
– Fraudulent Assign Certificate Title Security Interest Certificate, Misdemeanor 1

He is currently free on $15,000.00 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on August 30 in Venango County Central Court.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Oil City Patrolman Ruditis, Kot spoke with Police Chief Robert Wenner on July 24 and allegedly admitted to altering or destroying VIN numbers of two separate Pontiac Firebird or Firebird Trans Am vehicles in his possession.

Kot also allegedly made the same admission to City Manager Mark Schroyer and an employee of the county district attorney’s office, the complaint states.

During the investigation, Patrolman Ruditis discovered that Kot sold a black 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am on Facebook. Chief Wenner learned the buyer of the car was from Blairsville, Indiana County, according to the complaint.

Chief Wenner and Ruditis traveled to the Blairsville area and obtained search warrants for the vehicle, and it was determined the VIN number had been altered, and the title given by Kot to the other man was not for the vehicle he sold him, the complaint continues.
