Local Student Presents Possible Solution to Clarion Borough Pedestrian Crossing Issue

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — A Clarion Area High School student, Maddie McNamara, presented Clarion Borough council with an idea to possibly solve some of the issues with the crosswalk at Fifth and Main at the Tuesday, Sept. 5, borough council meeting.

McNamara spent some time this summer in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and they do something there she things could work in Clarion.

“They have flags in stands near the crosswalk that are brightly colored (red),” McNamara told the council. “The first person crossing grabs the flag and they become more visible to traffic.

“I know there are problems at Fifth Avenue and Main Street, and this could make people more visible. It seems to work in Jackson Hole. I just thought I would throw it out there as an idea.”

Council President Carol Lapinto said she would refer the idea to the Public Safety Committee, and Noto said he appreciated McNamara sharing the idea.

“We are always looking for ideas,” Noto said.

After the meeting, an informal reaction from some council members seemed to think the idea was a good one, although there was some concern about the flags going missing, especially on the weekends.
