Healthy Kids Running Series Begins Sunday for Area Youth

CLARION, Pa. — A new season of Healthy Kids Running Series begins this Sunday, September 17, in Shippenville at the Clarion County Park. The running series is run by the Clarion County YMCA for preschoolers through 8th graders.

Healthy Kids Running Series is a five-week non-profit youth running program created by Jeff Long, the organization’s founder and president. The program is designed to combat childhood obesity while providing children with a positive, educational and fun introduction to the world of running. The divisions and race distances are as follows:

– Pre-Kindergarten – 50 yard dash
– Pre-Kindergarten – 75 yard dash
– Kindergarten and First Grade – quarter mile
– Second and Third Grade – Half Mile
– Fourth and Fifth Grade – Mile
– Sixth through Eighth Grade – Mile

There are no weekly practices, just fun races on Sundays. Running begins at 4:30 p.m. on five Sundays, September 17, 24, and October 1, 8, and 15. The cost is $10.00 per race or $35.00 for the series.

Registration is online at www.healthykidsrunningseries.org and at the event.

“Healthy Kids Running Series is all about having fun and motivating kids to be active,” said founder Jeff Long. “Our goal is to provide a fun and positive experience for every participant and see them improve over the five weeks. We’re thrilled to be working with the Clarion County YMCA again. They had an extremely successful event last fall with over 150 local kids participating.”

At the completion of the series, each participant receives a medal, and trophies will be awarded based on total points to the top boy and girl in each age group.

All runners who are pre-registered online receive a very nice HKRS tech tee shirt. To register a child, become a volunteer or sponsor the program, please visit www.healthykidsrunningseries.org.

Jesse Kelley, Clarion County YMCA Branch Director, is the community coordinator for the event. He can be contacted directly with any questions at jkelley@clarionymca.net or 814-764-3400.
