CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — A smartphone may no longer hold secrets of people arrested for drugs in Clarion County.

Clarion County Commissioners approved the purchase of a new product on Tuesday morning that will help the Clarion Narcotics Enforcement Task Force (CNET) in its war on drugs.

The Cellebrite hardware and license serves as a cell phone information extractor that officials can use to uncover valuable information including cell phone calls, texts, and other information on cell phones captured during a drug arrest.

Commissioner Ted Tharan said the alleged drug offender must grant permission for police to use Cellebrite or police need to obtain a warrant.

The total cost for the unit is $5,300.00 and the first-year license is $3,700.00.

Called a Universal Forensic Extraction Device (UFED), this tool makes quick work of retrieving forensic information by allowing police to review the phone’s records despite any password.

“Our full range of digital forensic solutions provide access to mobile devices, social media, and cloud data sources; our triage solutions improve the efficiency of digital investigations, and our powerful data analytics to provide critical insight when it’s needed most,” stated the Cellebrite web page. “By deploying Cellebrite’s digital intelligence solution set, customers can better leverage digital evidence to accelerate investigations and intelligence gathering operations.”

Since entering the mobile forensics space in 2007, customers have deployed more than 60,000 UFED licenses globally in 150 countries, making Cellebrite the market share leader for mobile forensics worldwide.

Celebrite’s two subsidiary companies, Cellebrite USA Corp., and Cellebrite GmbH are respectively based in Parsippany, New Jersey, US, and Munich, Germany. Cellebrite is a fully owned subsidiary of Sunsoft, a publicly traded company listed on JASDAQ (6736/JQ) based in Nagoya, Japan.

Cellebrite Mobile Synchronization is an Israeli company that manufactures data extraction, transfer, and analysis devices for cellular phones and mobile devices.
