WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Clarion men’s basketball team captured their first victory of the 2017-18 season defeating Fayetteville State 81-76 on Saturday night.

Clarion finishes their trip to Winston-Salem going 1-1 on the weekend.

On Saturday, it was Clarion’s duo of Khari Williams and Cameron Grumley who led the way, each recording double-digit scoring efforts. Williams was the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles, netting 18 points on a very efficient 6 of 11 shooting to go along with 6 rebounds.

Grumley added 16 points of his own while also grabbing 5 boards and picking up 3 steals.

Clarion shot 43 percent from the floor converting 28 of 65 attempts. Neither team shot particularly well from three-point range, as the Golden Eagles were just 6 of 25 but did convert 19 of 25 free throw attempts on the night.

Clarion will play its home opener Wednesday evening when they welcome Penn State Greater Allegheny to Tippin Gymnasium for 7 p.m. tip.

WOMEN NO MATCH FAIRMONT

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Clarion women’s basketball team dropped the second game of the MEC/PSAC Challenge on Saturday, losing by an 80-46 score to Fairmont State. The Golden Eagles (1-1) will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Wilmington.

Amesha Harden-Pullium had a team-high 19 points while also grabbing four rebounds and three steals. Tynita White broke double-figures with 10 points off the bench while Tracy Wiehe had seven points and seven rebounds.

The Golden Eagles struggled in the first half as the Falcon defense controlled the tempo through the first 20 minutes. In the first quarter, the Golden Eagles actually held the early lead, scoring the first two buckets of the night. Harden-Pullium pulled in an offensive rebound and tipped it back in just 44 seconds into the game to put Clarion ahead, and Wiehe nailed a midrange jumper to give the Golden Eagles a two-point lead.

Fairmont State took over from there, though, building a 13-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The lead ballooned to double-digits in the second, with Clarion not getting back on the scoreboard until four straight free throw makes by Yasmin Lewis. Wiehe got back on the scoresheet with a make in the paint with just 55 seconds left in the period, and Tynita White scored on Clarion’s final possession of the half to make it 35-13 at the break.

Things began to change in the third quarter as Clarion began to claw their way back in. Lewis made a jumper to make it 37-19, and later she delivered a feed to White that she laid in to make it 49-27. Harden-Pullium knocked down a three at the 2:17 mark and Lewis had a make in the paint with 1:39 left in the third quarter to 55-33.

In the fourth quarter, White reached double-digits with a free throw to make it 70-41, and Harden-Pullium added a pair of free throws to make it 74-43.
