After basic training in Sampson N.Y., he was assigned to the Naval Operating base in Bainbridge MD and then to Norfolk VA. He was then assigned to a brand new ship, the USS Fiske DD 842. Being the first crew to serve on it, the first voyage was a shakedown cruise to Greenland with many stops along the way. Upon returning to Norfolk, they were waiting on their next assignment and preparing to enter the wartime theatre when they received word that the war had ended.
