Three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Softball Player to Attend Softball Clinics in Tionesta

TIONESTA, Pa. (EYT) — Little Tionesta is going big time Feb. 17-18 when Tionesta Sports and Recreation will play host to a girls’ softball clinic at West Forest Junior/Senior High School featuring Olympic Gold Medalist Leah Amico.

Amico, a three-time United States Olympic Gold Medalist, will be joined by the Penn State Behrend softball team in putting on the clinic, which is for girls ages eight to 18.

There will be two sessions broken into three clinics with each sessions costing $50. The first sessions will be Saturday, Feb. 17, and will include a pair of clinics. The morning clinic, from 8 a.m. to noon is for girls ages 8 to 12 and the afternoon clinic, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., is for girls 13 to 18. The Feb. 17 session will concentrate on pitching, hitting, fielding and throwing and is open to the first 100 registrants per age group.

The Sunday, Feb. 18 clinic will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is an in-depth pitching clinic that is open to the first 40 registrants.

A registration form can be downloaded here (pdf) and the forms are due back by Jan. 12. T-shirts and water will be provided and refreshments will be available for purchase. Players must bring their own equipment. Checks can be made payable to Tionesta Sports & Recreation.

“We think this is a great opportunity for girls who live in our area, not just Forest County,” Britney Donato, vice-president of Tionesta Sports and Recreation said.

ABOUT LEAH AMICO

Amico was an outfielder for the 1996 and 2000 Gold Medal winning US teams and played first base on the 2004 team. She was a standout at Arizona as a pitcher and first baseman and is also a two-time World Champion. She teaches softball players all over the country the fundamental skills of softball while empowering them to be their best off the field. Leah covers all aspects of the game. She was recruited by the University of Arizona as a pitcher and 1st baseman and won three national championships with the Wildcats and was named to the NCAA Division I Softball 25th Anniversary Team in 2006.

During the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics, Leah played outfield. Leah also played first base for the 2004 Olympic team.

Leah is a left-handed hitter who hits, slaps and drag bunts, and she enjoys teaching children how to be an offensive threat. This versatility allows her to relate to athletes with all different strengths and skill sets.

Amico holds the Women’s College World Series Record for batting average in a single tournament, hitting .750 (9 for 12) in 1994. She also was a 3-Time First-Team NFCA All-American and 3-Time First-Team Academic All-American. Leah was named the NCAA Woman of The Year for the state of Arizona in 1997. She was also named the No. 44 Best Athlete in California High School of all time.

Currently an ESPN analyst for College Softball along with being the Westwood Radio Analyst for Finals at the Women’s College World Series, Amico instructs softball clinics all around the country to inspire girls that if you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride- and never quit, you will be a winner.
