Clarion Wrestling Splits Four Matches at LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Clarion wrestling team split four dual matches at Long Island Wrestling Day on Sunday, claiming a 35-6 decision over UNC Pembroke and a 30-14 win over the hosting Pioneers while dropping a 25-18 bout to Hofstra and a 25-14 one to Columbia.

The Golden Eagles (3-3) will be back on the road next weekend to take on VMI and Davidson.

Below is a capsule of each of the four dual matches wrestled by the Golden Eagles today:

The Golden Eagles ran into some rough luck against the Pride, as Jake Gromacki held a 6-0 lead against Jacob Martin before being forced to withdraw due to a medical reason. Brock Zacherl got Clarion on the board with the first of four wins on the day, just narrowly missing out on a technical fall over Charlie Kane, and Taylor Ortz scored a major decision over Connor Burkert.

Clarion went without a win until the 174-pound match, when Dom Rigous broke a scoreless deadlock after two periods with an escape and a takedown in the third against Bobby Fehr. Rigous rode Fehr out the rest of the way to pick up the riding time edge for a 4-0 decision. Greg Bulsak also endured a scoreless first period but reversed out of the down position and picked up two near falls against Mike Oxley, eventually taking a 10-0 major decision. Dustin Conti held on for a 3-2 decision at 197-pounds, escaping in the third period to take the win, but a pinfall win at heavyweight gave Miek Hughes the victory.

Gavin Park picked up the first of three pinfall wins to open the match, catching Hunter Dusold and flattening him just 42 seconds into their bout. Zacherl tacked on more bonus points with a technical fall over Christian Briody, outpacing him 22-7 to give Clarion an 11-5 advantage. Columbia took control of the team match with five straight wins, including two tight decisions that might have sent the match in the other direction. Conti picked up his second win of the day, taking an early lead over Michael Bulkin and tacking on in the third period for a 7-4 decision.

Clarion’s most dominant win of the day came in the third bout, as the Golden Eagles took eight of 10 matches against UNC Pembroke. Park added another first-period fall and Zacherl posted another technical fall, beating Luke McDonough by a 17-1 score. Joe Sliwoski saw his first action of the day and added a tech fall of his own, beating Dustin Smith 15-0, and Avery Shay broke through with an 8-7 decision over Eric Milks.

Jimmy Miller entered and scored some bonus points with a major decision at 165 pounds, while Rigous earned his second win of the day with a pin of Blaine Shade in the final four seconds of their bout. Bulsak claimed a 6-1 decision for his second win of the day, and Toby Cahill earned his first with a 10-5 decision over Andrew Colborn in the heavyweight match.

Park completed the natural hat trick with his third win by fall in a row, pinning Nicholas Conetta just two minutes into the 125-pound match. Zacherl claimed a 5-3 decision to complete his 4-0 day, while Sliwoski held off Peter DeTore in a high scoring affair at 149 pounds. Taylor Cahill earned his first win of the day with a 3-2 decision over Jackson Mordente at 165 pounds, and Rigous finished off his day with a 17-0 technical fall over Mark Malico at 184. Also wrestling up a class was Bulsak, who beat Robert Pease by major decision, and Brylee Shumakerpinned Damien Caffrey at the end of the second period to complete Clarion’s win over the Pioneers.
