Local Students Participate in National Walkout Against Gun Violence

ROCKY GROVE, Pa. (EYT) – Students across the country, including some from the area, were part of a national effort to remember the Parkland, Florida shooting victims and to protest gun violence.

It’s been one month since the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School left 17 dead and dozens more wounded.

At Rocky Grove High School, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), led by Hannah Young, Hayley Ripple and Carly Rae Stewart led a march that included an estimated 150 students.

“We wanted to do something, so we met to organize it, and the school approved it,” Young said.

The students walked through and around the high school. In addition, an announcement about why the walkout was held was read over the school’s public address system.

“There were also students from Oil City, Franklin, and other schools that participated,” Stewart said. “We hope it motivates the students at election time.”

Young said the school was very divided on the issue of gun control.

“We have a very divided school about the gun control issue. We’re not against guns, but this is about the shooting that has taken place.”

“We’ve taken a lot of flack over this.”

The nationally organized walkouts, most of which were expected to last 17 minutes in symbolic tribute to the Florida victims, are unprecedented in recent American history.

The coordinated walkouts were loosely organized by Empower, the youth wing of the Women’s March, which brought thousands to Washington, D.C., last year.

The group urged students to leave class at 10:00 a.m. local time for 17 minutes – one minute for each victim in the Florida shooting – and suggested demands for lawmakers that included an assault weapons ban and mandatory background checks for all gun sales.
