ABERDEEN, Md. – The Clarion University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to East Stroudsburg University, falling 8-4 in game one, followed by a 7-2 defeat in game two.

The games were played at the Ripken Complex in Aberdeen, Md., and moved up to Thursday due to weather.

Clarion drops to 5-10 overall while East Stroudsburg improves to 9-7.

Game 1

The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the first with a 2-out single by Laine Renaud to take a 1-0 lead.

A pair of doubles around a Clarion error would lead to three more runs for East Stroudsburg in the bottom of the third, as they took a controlling 4-0 lead.

Clarion starter Jeremy Frazier would settle in after that, finishing the day with five innings pitched, allowing five runs, only three earned, while striking out five and walking none.

Left-handed reliever Bailey Durocher would come in to pitch the sixth, surrendering three runs, one earned, on just one hit, and a pair of walks.

The Clarion bats finally broke through in the 7th inning, as catcher Austin Blauser laced a 2-run single to right to cut the deficit to 8-2. Matt Privette would bring in another run on a fielders choice, followed by a Will Constantin RBI single to make it 8-4. The Warriors got the next batter, Nick Fugh, to ground out to shortstop to end the game.

Blauser led the Golden Eagles in game one, going 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI’s. Dillon Wolbert, Cole Shaffer, Matt Kamenicky, and Constantin each added one hit apiece in the loss.

Game 2

Sloppy play by both teams led to a pair of runs for each squad early in the second game. Knotted at 2-2, East Stroudsburg used three doubles in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Warriors would get a solo homer by Renaud followed by an RBI single off the bat of Joey Paolini to take a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third.

Clarion starter Nate Torbich would go on to retire the next eight consecutive batters, finishing the game with five innings of work, allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits. Torbich struck out three and did not walk a batter on the afternoon.

Reliever Tiler Sadowski pitched the bottom of the sixth, giving up one run on one hit and a walk.

Clarion only managed four hits in the second game, getting singles from Fugh, Devin Beverly, Shaffer and Jake Turpin.

Up next for the Golden Eagles is the start of PSAC competition, as Clarion will travel to Gannon for a doubleheader in Erie on Friday, March 23.

SOFTBALL SWEPT

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Clarion softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday, falling by scores of 7-2 and 9-1 to Kutztown as part of the PFX Spring Games. The Golden Eagles (2-12) will close their week tomorrow with a doubleheader against Northwestern Ohio.

Rebecca Kelley bashed her first home run of the season in the early game against the Golden Bears, a solo shot with one out that nearly sparked a Clarion rally. The Golden Eagles got two more runners aboard with two outs but were unable to finish the comeback, as they stranded the pair at the corners. Kelley was one of five Golden Eagles with hits in the first game, while Cassidy Runyan drove in the other run.

In the late game, Jessica Cartia went 2-for-2 with an RBI, driving in Moriah Lynn in the fourth inning. Macy Rubin(0-2) took the loss in Game 1 with seven runs allowed – but just one earned – while Sarah Gossard (1-5) allowed seven runs in the second game.

Kutztown struck first in Game 1, scoring two runs in the first and adding three more in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The advantage eventually reached 6-0 before Runyan plated Clarion’s first run in the fourth. Cartia hit a two-out double to the gap in right center, and Runyan launched one to the gap in left-center to bring her home and make it 6-1. The Golden Bears made it 7-1 in the seventh inning before Kelley’s blast.

The Golden Bears enjoyed a four-run first in Game 2 to make it 4-0 and held a 7-0 lead before Clarion’s first run of the game. Moriah Lynn reached on a fielder’s choice, making it a two-out situation, and eventually came around to score after an error from the left fielder on Cartia’s single.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Clarion tennis team dropped a close contest on the third day of their spring trip, falling by a 5-4 score to PSAC foe East Stroudsburg on Thursday. The Golden Eagles (3-5) will wrap up their trip tomorrow when they face Shepherd at 4:15 p.m.

The Golden Eagles and the Warriors split the six singles matches on the afternoon, but East Stroudsburg was able to come away with two of the three doubles matches to clinch the win. Alivia Arnold and Maria Snyder authored the Clarion win in doubles, beating the No. 1 duo of Marina Zardet and Aubrianna Stetina in a tiebreaker. With things knotted up at 8-8, Arnold and Snyder held on for a 9-7 win in the breaker to take the victory.
