STRATTANVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — The Smith Farm — one of the Clarion County dairy farms that recently received a contract termination letter from Dean Foods — landed a new contract this week.

The Smith Farm outside of Strattanville dates back to the late 1800′s and was recognized as a Century Farm by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture in 2016, but that didn’t help when their dairy contract was suddenly terminated.

Robert Smith of the Smith Farm was worried he was going to be left out on his own. While several other local farms found a new home for their milk with Schneider’s Dairy, Smith’s farm was too far out of the way for them.

“I’d have liked to have gone with those guys who went with Schneider’s, but my farm was just too far away. That’s one of the reasons why they didn’t take me.”

“But, Connie from Schneider’s said they didn’t want to leave me hanging. She made some phone calls and got me in with Farmers Cheese in New Wilmington. They didn’t have many spots left, but I got on,” Smith said.

Smith signed his new contract on Wednesday and will be supplying milk to Farmers Cheese effective on Sunday, April 1.

“I’m blessed; I’m just so happy I got on someplace. This market is really terrible. If anyone else gets dropped, it’ll take a miracle to get on somewhere, it’s that bad.”
