Clarion-based State Police Tpr. Berggren said the accident happened around 12:15 a.m. on Miola Road approximately 1/2 mile from Bigley Road.
According to police, a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 operated by a known male left the roadway and traveled over a culvert before colliding with a tree.
Three medical helicopters – two LifeFlight units and one STAT MedEvac chopper – were dispatched shortly after the crash.
One of the passengers – 29-year-old Mark Marcucci of West Middlesex – was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:32 a.m. by Clarion County Coroner Randall Stom. Stom said the cause of death was blunt force trauma.
The driver and two other passengers were flown to Pittsburgh area hospitals for treatment.
One of those occupants, 23-year-old Kevin Yarabinec of Sharpsville, Pa., was pronounced dead on Sunday evening at a Pittsburgh area hospital.
There is no word on the current condition of the other two occupants. Their names have not been released.
Clarion Fire & Hose Company No. 1 and Clarion Hospital Ambulance were also called to the scene.
Shippenville-Elk Twp. Volunteer Fire Department was summoned to set up a landing zone at Clarion University Memorial Stadium.
Tpr. Berggren said the investigation is ongoing and additional information will be provided at a later date.
Yarabinec was a right-handed pitcher at Youngstown State University from 2014-17 and graduated in May 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
“Kevin was not only a great player, but he was an even better teammate and friend. His smile and energy were infectious. He lit up our clubhouse every day, and we will carry fond memories of him the rest of our lives,” said Youngstown State head coach Dan Bertolini in a release issued Monday. “Our entire team extends our deepest condolences to his family. He will be sorely missed.”
The school has made grief counselors available for students, faculty, and others affected by the death of Yarabinec.
