RIMERSBURG, Pa. (D9Sports) — Karns City scored in each of its first six at-bats including multiple runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to remain unbeaten with an 11-4 win at Union Wednesday afternoon.

The Gremlins (13-0) raced out to a 6-0 lead after 2 ½ innings and then scored five more runs in its next three times at the plate after Union (2-7) made a game of it with four runs in the bottom of the third.

Relisten to the game

Tyler Yough was right in the middle of all the action for Karns City picking up the win on the mound while also driving in four runs.

Yough’s second-inning, two-out, bases-loaded, bases-clearing triple helped stake Karns City to the early lead, and he finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and the four RBIs.

Yough also threw well despite a hiccup in the third inning when Union broke through for its four runs. He went six innings allowing four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out 10 and was named the Hager Paving Player of the Game.

Yough talked about his performance and the win.

Yough had plenty of help on the offensive end from his Karns City’s teammates, as the Gremlins had 12 hits off four Union pitchers.

Logan Pistorius, who also got the final three outs on the mound striking out a pair, was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and two RBIs, Steve O’Donnell was 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and three runs scored, Austin Rumbaugh was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and three run scored and Jake Weckerly was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.

Union got a strong game from Isaac Yoder, who was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, while Luke Salvo added a two-run double and also scored a run.

Early on, it looked like Union started Luke Bowser was going to walk through some rain drops before Yough came up with the big two-out hit in the second to get the ball rolling for Karn City.

In the first inning, the first three Gremlins reached base including a run-producing single by Yough, who then stole second to give Karns City runners on second and third with no outs.

But Luke Bowser, only a sophomore, struck out the next three Gremlins to escape the jam without further damage.

Bowser looked like he was going to do some more magician work in the second when Karns City put runners on second and third with no outs again before Bowser struck out Conner Schaffner and walked O’Donnell. But Bowser struck out Nolan Riley, who had a rough day at the plate with three strikeouts, for the second out leaving him only Yough to face without letting up any runs.

But Yough laced a pitch into centerfield that ended up clearing the bases to open the game up for the Gremlins, who then added a fifth run when Pistorius brought home Yough with a double to left.

Karns City seemed to be really rolling in the third when Rumbaugh scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.

But a funny thing happened to the Gremlins seemingly easy win. The Union bats woke up against Yough, who had an ERA under 1.00 coming into the game.

After Hunter Johnston struck out to lead off the third, the fourth straight strikeout from Yough, the Gremlins righty lost Clayton Marsh, walking the junior. But he seemed to still be in good shape when he struck out Karter Vogle, and Weckerly, the catcher, came oh so close to picking off Marsh at first on the strikeout after Marsh had wandered too far off the bag. But Marsh somehow got back in safely before Riley could get the tag down, and that turned out to be a big break for the Golden Knights.

Yoder followed with a double to right that scored Marsh, and Reice Saylor walked. Salvo then roped a rocket into the left-center field gap that scored a pair of runs cutting the Karns City lead to three, 6-3. Lucas Bowser — the senior not to be confused with the pitcher Luke Bowser — then blooped a single into right to make it 6-4.

But that was all the damage Union managed off of Yough, as the righty stranded runners on second and third with one out in the fourth by striking out Lucas Bowser and getting Luke Bowser to ground to first. He then left Marsh at second in the sixth by striking out Vogle.

Meanwhile, Karns City’s bats never quit.

A double by Pistorius, a wild pitch, a walk and an infield single by Colton Hutchinson got one of the runs back in the fourth.

Then in the fifth with two outs, O’Donnell triple to right-center and scored when Riley struck out on a ball that hit the plate and skipped away from Salvo the catcher with Riley reaching first safely.

A walk by Yough and a base hit to left by Pistorius made it 9-4.

The Gremlins finished off the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.

Union is slated to host A-C Valley on Thursday, weather permitting, while Karns City is off until Monday when it travels to A-C Valley.
