ThumbnailJoan L. Boyles, 78, of Franklin, passed away at UMPC Northwest at 11:25 am on May 14, 2018.

Born on December 22, 1939, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Daniel W. and Dorothy E. (Calwell) Umstead, Sr.

She married Edward W. Boyles on August 24, 1968. He preceded her in death on December 29, 1992.

Joan retired after 25 years of working in the housekeeping department at the Franklin Hospital. She also worked for Polk Center for six years in the Food Service department. She was a member of the VFW Jesse Greer Post 1835 Ladies Auxiliary.

Joan loved to play bingo and enjoyed camping, fishing, and gardening in her flower garden or just being outdoors. She also enjoyed going to yard sales.

Left to cherish her memory is her sister, Shirley Diefenderfer of Franklin; her brother, Charles Umstead of Corry; numerous nieces an nephews including her very special nephew, Jordan Johnson of Franklin.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mae Kay, Sara Meals, Betty Manroll, Mary Briley, Dorothy Longwell and Barbara Umstead and her brothers, Danial Umstead, Jr and Clarence “Edward” Umstead.

A memorial service for Mrs. Boyles will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the Franklin Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church with Reverend Jonathan Bell, Pastor of the church, officiating.
